Skirmishes, UI Refresh, and More! – Development Update – September 2024

Recently, some players have reported experiencing graphical stutters during gameplay on PC especially on high refresh rate monitors. We hear you and have been hard at work on it. We have made optimizations recently to improve performance, but today we are releasing a build on the Steam tech-test branch that specifically targets this issue. Additionally, we are preparing to upgrade this client from 32-bit to 64-bit in the future, which may offer potential improvements as it allows the game to utilize much more memory on the machine.

To help us test this update:

Right click on Brawlhalla in your Steam library, select “Properties”, navigate to “Betas”, and select “tech-test – Testing new engine tech”. Then, navigate to “General” of Brawlhalla Properties, and in the launch options text field enter “-framefix -setfps 240”. (Change 240 to whatever the maximum hz your monitor is capable of, generally 144, 240, or 360.)

Game performance is an ongoing effort and a never-ending part of development. We understand that in a fighting game like Brawlhalla every millisecond counts. We are always monitoring and investigating performance reports and your game experience is extremely important to us. We appreciate your help and feedback as we continue to optimize and improve the smooth performance of the game.

In the past, Brawlhalla’s UI has had few changes. We landed on a UI that we were comfortable with and now it’s long overdue for an overhaul. So today we’re excited to show y’all a first pass of the UI update! After last year’s refresh of our logo and branding we were inspired to link the in-game UI with this new aesthetic. You’ll notice Legend splash arts in Legend select, a brand new look for the top right player menu, new fonts, all new buttons, and many many other things.

You, the community, have requested Damage Numbers for a long time. And here’s a first look at it! This is an opt-in feature found in the top right player menu. Toggling Damage Numbers on adds a number in-game next to each health bar that shows the exact damage that each player has taken. This is for highly competitive players who want to capitalize on specific damage thresholds to optimize play and for practicing when to go for those KO options.

Brawlhalla has been around for almost a decade… let that sink in. We’re kicking off our 10th Anniversary celebrations at BCX this year. We’ll be seeing some of the biggest announcements & reveals in Brawlhalla history while watching the most competitive tournament of Esports Season 9. There will be non-stop entertainment at the event and for those watching at home. Go to BCX.LIVE to sign up as a spectator or competitor for this historic Expo. Play games and activities with friends, be part of the energy in the crowd, and make lifelong memories. See y’all there!

Skirmishes are a type of in-game event that splits players into several personal preference themed teams called “Factions” to compete against each other for points called “Influence.” Players earn Influence for their Faction when playing Brawlhalla, and players get bonus Influence for their Factions by playing Ranked against the opposing Factions! The Faction with the most Influence when the Skirmish ends is the winner.

Skirmishes is not a new Game Mode. It’s a whole new thing. When you log in, you will choose a Faction and get Items based on that faction, like a Title and an Avatar. The winning Faction will get special versions of those Items. Skirmishes are limited time Events that will last around 1-2 weeks, and each Skirmish is a unique theme with unique rewards. We are looking to launch the first Skirmish in October and we’ll have more information on it as we get closer to the date.
